Stop Filming Us But Listen

Congolese re-editing of documentary Stop Filming Us

Doxy

In his documentary Stop Filming Us, which is set in the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Dutch filmmaker Joris Postema explored the link between stereotypes and the power imbalances stemming from colonialism and its impact on the representation of the DRC. After a screening of Stop Filming Us in Goma, audiences wondered if the film could tell a different story with the same footage. Together with producer Ganza Buroko, filmmakers Bernadette Vivuya and Kagoma Twahirwa re-edited the footage into a version that better reflects their perspective and does justice to their own experiences.
